As I help more and more people throughout the years I’ve noticed a big problem and disconnect in the process of passing on knowledge and health to our youth. Healthy children come from healthy parents, or do they? About 85 % of the parents I’ve trained and taught how to live a better and healthier lifestyle do not try and make it the only option to live in their own homes for their children and family.
With childhood obesity and Type 2 diabetes becoming more common you can say we aren’t off to a great start in fostering healthy children. So ….. Houston we definitely have a problem!
I know you’re busy, but this is my call to action to parents. You may pop over to these guys to mold your children’s personalities, but their health is still your responsibility. You must take on another responsibility most let fall by the wayside. That is the responsibility of helping and healing our youth right from your own kitchen. As it’s often said education doesn’t stop after school. Educate your children about nutritious choices, exercise, why to stay away from processed foods, etc. Parents who are actively involved in their child’s nutrition can grow an overall greater relationship with their children.
4 things you can do for Healthy Children
- Get the junk food out of the house!!! If it’s not in your home, it can’t be consumed. Unlike us adults who can drive to Wendy’s or the Chocolate Shop when we want to, kids can’t!
- You are the parent! It’s okay to say NO. Kids often eat whatever is given to them: healthy or unhealthy. Let them know you care and will say NO, BUT you can have the healthier option.
- Don’t be a hypocrite! You must let them see your passion and love for a healthier options & lifestyles. Lead by example. You’re working hard on your own health, explain to them why it’s the best choice for them too.
- Make eating junk food and unhealthy snacks the 5% of your weekly nutrition – the tiny minority. For example, take your kids out for ice cream once a week instead of constantly having it in your own home freezer. It’s better for them to know its a sometime treat than at their disposal any night of the week.
I believe having healthy choices at home is the best way we have to encourage healthier futures for our children. Take the great opportunity to help your children understand how important food is in their own bodies and pass on all that knowledge you’ve gained from living a healthy life yourself!
